Generators and Air Compressors

Generators and air compressors provide the power needed to keep all of the other spray foam equipment running and working efficiently. This is important because these jobs frequently are performed at sites where electrical service may not be available or convenient to access.

Generators

The majority of most spray foam equipment requires electricity via a generator and compressed air in order to operate properly and smoothly. The electricity provides the power for the machine’s console electronics, including temperature controllers and on/off switches to perform the right way. Electricity also powers the electric pumps that run the hydraulic or electric motors that operate proportioning/metering pump system. This is the pump system that delivers the material through the machine and out to the gun.

Keep in mind: your generator must provide the same electrical output as the spray foam machine. For example, a single-phase generator will not run a three-phase spray foam machine. Be sure to make sure your total spray foam system is compatible, especially if you are building a mobile rig on your own.

Powering Your Generator

One commonly overlooked issue is powering the generator itself. Did you know that most commercial generators run on diesel fuel? This brings up many considerations in both the design and operation. For example, you need to know how much fuel consumption the generator will use in order to keep it running to complete a job. Additionally, you should determine how easy it is to fill the generator with fuel. Is the fill connection easy to reach with a standard fuel pump and hose? Or, will you have to fill it by transferring fuel from supply to jug?

Air Compressors

Compressed air is required for many components in and around a spray foam equipment operation. Some foam machines use a pneumatically driven motor to operate the proportioning pump. These machines typically require a much larger air compressor with higher air volume (CFM) ratings. If the machine pump drive system is electric or electric/hydraulic, compressed air is still required to operate the spray gun, transfer pumps and any other pneumatic tools.

Size Matters

When it comes to selecting an air compressor, remember, size matters. Material supply pumps commonly use air to operate. If they do not get enough air to operate effectively, problems can arise. Be sure to take into account the entire system of equipment and tools when specifying and sizing your air compressor.
