What to Consider When Buying Used SPF Equipment for Your Rig

By Kevin Malone

When you need to save on the cost of spray foam equipment, using second-hand equipment can save you thousands. If you shop carefully, you can get excellent deals on used spray foam equipment that has been tested, is still compatible with existing replacement parts, and is durable enough to provide years of use.

At Intech Equipment & Supply, we take the guesswork out of finding used spray foam rigs for you. We consider many factors before listing any used spray foam equipment for sale. If you want used equipment to tide you over, here is what to consider before buying.

Check if Replacement Parts Are Available

Before you buy used spray foam equipment anywhere, check with the vendor to see if parts are available in case you need repairs. Since used spray foam equipment has been in use longer than new equipment, it will likely need extra TLC to keep it functional. So, it’s important to select equipment that is compatible with replacement maintenance parts that are readily available.

The older the model, the less likely it is that you will be able to find the parts you need. Therefore, we only stock name-brand used spray foam equipment that is not too old.

Consider Its Cost per Run

As soon as any equipment is used, its lifetime value calculator starts. This determines how much bang you get for your buck. For instance, if you buy a faulty used spray foam gun for $1,000 and it only lasts through ten uses, it costs $100 per use. Compare this to a functional used model that lasts through many more jobs. The cost per run ends up being far less.

It is essential to be realistic about how long machines and spray foam guns will last. Well-known, reputable brands like Graco and PMC are transparent about the estimated life of their equipment. Graco says electric spray foam machines typically last 7–10 years, while the life cycle of a hydraulic machine can is about 10–12 years. This means an 8-year-old electric spray foam machine is not a good investment.

New spray foam equipment has the best chance of having the longest run time. But if you cannot afford the high upfront cost of a new machine, you should look for well-maintained used spray foam equipment or used spray foam rigs.

Consider Warranty Availability

Second-hand equipment sales are usually final and do not offer the same guarantees as new equipment. While new equipment usually includes a manufacturer's warranty, a used spray foam rig may not come with the same assurances. However, you can trust the reputation of top brands like Graco and PMC. For example, if you buy a used Graco Reactor 2 that is refurbished and tested, it should provide years of reliable service.

Consider Where You Buy

The distributor you choose matters. Plenty of used equipment is available, but many of the products are unchecked and untested. When you purchase a used spray foam rig from an unknown vendor, you may think you got a great deal, only to find out later that you have a lemon. Red flags include used equipment sold "as is" and a seller with no organized process to vet equipment.

Consider Distributor Credentials

While just about anyone can post an online listing, it is best to buy from an established company that understands the spray foam industry. When experts examine and vet used equipment, you have the confidence of knowing they only accept the best for their customers.
